What is a Boiler Tube?
Boiler tubes are metal tubes, typically made of carbon steel or alloy steel, used in industrial boilers. They are also used in fossil fuel plants, steam boilers, power generation, industrial processing plants, electric power plants, and many other industrial applications. These tubes can be made for medium-pressure boiler pipes or high-pressure boiler pipes.
Medium-pressure and high-pressure boiler tubes undergo the same initial process when manufactured. The standard procedure includes fine drawing, surface polishing, hot rolling, and subsequent cold drawing with heat expansion. The following must be done to ensure the boiler pipes are ready for high pressure.
Heat treatment includes heating and cooling to increase toughness and overall wear resistance for high-pressure boiler tubes. The heat treatment steps include quenching, tempering, and annealing.
The quenching is done to increase the hardness and durability of the high-pressure boiler tube. The tube (pipe) is then heated evenly to a hot temperature and then quickly cooled off in water or oil for instant cooling, which is then followed by cooling in air or in a freezing zone. Brittleness is then removed from the pipe through tempering. In the last phase of the process, the tube is increased to a hot temperature and then left for slow cooling in ash or lime, which is referred to as annealing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Boiler tubes are metal tubes, usually made of carbon steel or alloy steel, used in industrial boilers. They are extensively used across various industrial sectors, including fossil fuel plants, steam boilers, power generation facilities, industrial processing plants, and electric power plants. These tubes are integral components of industrial boilers, available in configurations suitable for both medium-pressure and high-pressure applications.
We can provide the highest quality ASME Standard industrial boiler tubes and pipes to meet your application and requirements. Some of these different types of tubes include Sumitomo and stainless steel boiler tubes.
When choosing boiler pipes and tubes, it’s essential to factor in elements like operating temperature and pressure, fluid characteristics, corrosion resistance, mechanical durability, and suitability for the boiler system. Adherence to industry standards and regulations is also paramount to guarantee safety and optimal performance.
Indeed, safety takes precedence when handling boiler pipes and tubes due to their exposure to elevated temperatures, pressures, and potentially dangerous fluids. Comprehensive training, utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE), and strict adherence to safety procedures are imperative to mitigate risks, prevent accidents, and safeguard the welfare of personnel involved in boiler system operations.
